STATEMENT: The National Multicultural Greek Council, Inc Responds to Recent Mass Shootings

The National Multicultural Greek Council (NMGC) joins the nation in grieving the recent mass shootings in Gilroy, CA, El Paso, TX and Dayton, Ohio. We offer our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of those impacted by these shootings and the community at large. We, at the NMGC, represent thousands of student and alumnae multicultural greeks nationwide who work daily to advocate for justice and equality around the world. The NMGC rebukes the recurring acts of hatred, violence, and xenophobia fueled by racist ideologies to uphold white supremacy that continues to  plague the United States. The increased domestic terrorism over the last year has been exponential. We demand meaningful solutions to protect our communities. There is no justification for these radical attacks on our human right to live and action must be taken now.

The Gun Violence Archive, an official corporation that monitors the number of gun violence incidents in the U.S., has concluded that there have been 32 mass shootings in the U.S. this year alone. Mass shootings have become a regular occurrence and is a real possibility in everyone’s lives now. There is no more luxury in disregarding these blatant attacks on our livelihood. If we do nothing, there will be no change brought to our nation.

The aforementioned mass shootings, in addition to the hundreds of other documented gun violence incidents, are senseless and could have been avoided with reformed gun laws in place. For those wishing to take action and speak out against these egregious acts, the NMGC has provided resources listed on our website at www.nationalmgc.org/resources.

The Executive Board extends an open invite for support to those members who have been affected by recent events and may need assistance. Please be mindful of your mental health and share with us any social justice initiatives in which you will be needing the support of the NMGC.

For more information or assistance, please contact Zondra Victor, Public Relations Coordinator, at pr@nationalmgc.org.
