STATEMENT: The Murder of Nina Pop, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and Sean Reed – The NMGC rejects racists and transphobic acts of violence towards our black communities and we are in solidarity with our members who have been impacted by recent events.

The council mourns the deaths of Nina Pop, Breonna Taylor,  Ahmaud Arbery and Sean Reed, who were recently killed in separate acts of racial and transphobic violence. The NMGC offers condolences to the families, in solidarity with our members who identify as part of the black and transgender communities and who have been affected by these acts of hatred.

We as a council denounce any and all acts of racism, transphobia, state-violence, and white supremacy. We stand in a unified voice to amplify movements of justice and equity. The NMGC does not tolerate any xenophobic or violent actions in our communities.

Jessica Peñaranda, President of the National Multicultural Greek Council, issued the following statement:

“While we mourn and provide care and support to our communities deeply impacted by continued violence, I urge us to stay vigilant and act in solidarity by taking the lead from black communities organizing for an END to anti-blackness, transphobia, and white supremacy, by any means necessary. We know all too well that the terrorizing, criminalization, and dehumanization of our black and brown communities will continue unless we resist and abolish the systems of state violence that perpetuate and sustain them.  Rest in Power Nina, Breona, Ahmaud, and Sean.”

For members who wish to become informed about organizations who are leading the battle against racial and transphobic violence, the NMGC has provided resources listed on our website at www.nationalmgc.org/resources.

The National Multicultural Greek Council (NMGC) is an umbrella council for a coalition of Multicultural Greek-Letter Organizations (MGLOs), established in 1998. The purpose of NMGC is to provide a forum that allows for the free exchange of ideas, programs, and services between its constituent fraternities and sororities; to promote the awareness of multicultural diversity within collegiate institutions, their surrounding communities, and the greater community-at-large, and to support and promote the works of its member organizations.
