STATEMENT: On National Hazing Prevention Week, NMGC Organizations Reaffirm their Commitment Against Hazing Practices

As National Hazing Prevention Week comes to a close, the member organizations of the National Multicultural Greek Council have taken the opportunity to reflect on the detrimental impact of hazing, and to reaffirm their year-round commitment against hazing practices by issuing the following statements:

Delta Sigma Chi Multicultural Sorority, Inc. President Nefertiti Middleton:

“Delta Sigma Chi Multicultural Sorority, Inc. and its founders pride ourselves in epitomizing our core principles of Sisterhood. Since our inception in 1996, we have been an organization dedicated to fairness and positivity. It is important that the manner in which we welcome new members into our sisterhood reflects that dedication. Hazing, in any form, is not supported by Delta Sigma Chi Multicultural Sorority, Inc. and will not be tolerated. Any reported instance of hazing will be addressed at the executive level and treated as grounds for dismissal for any member who is found to have violated this policy. In these challenging times, it is more important than ever that we, as an organization and as individuals, hold ourselves to the high standards represented in our core principles.”

Delta Xi Nu Multicultural Sorority, Inc. President Victoria J. Valdez:

“Delta Xi Nu is committed to the furtherance of multiculturalism by promoting diversity and cultural awareness in our local communities and throughout the world. Our purpose is to promote multiculturalism by educating the community and our peers about diversity and the importance of cultural awareness. Our sisters lead by example, act with passion and embrace all cultures in the task of educating others in a variety of issues. Delta Xi Nu Multicultural Sorority, Inc. does not condone or encourage any act of hazing being conducted by or associated with its members and organization. Our organization prides itself on being progressive in the education of anti-hazing and “Changing Old Ways to New” and regularly promoting anti-hazing through workshops, events, social media, and through our individual actions.” Click here to read the full statement.

Delta Xi Phi Multicultural Sorority, Inc. National President Nikita DeBarros:

“Delta Xi Phi Multicultural Sorority, Inc. was founded with the aim of advancing a multicultural society alongside service, friendship, and sisterhood. As such, our organization is committed to the prevention of hazing and firmly stands by our zero-tolerance policy. We find it imperative to uphold policies dedicated to preventing instances of hazing as well as to bring awareness to hazing and its associated consequences. We believe in upholding the rights of all, which involves ensuring the health, happiness, and success of our members. Delta Xi Phi is proud to be an anti-hazing organization.”

Gamma Eta Sorority, Inc. National President Claudia Reyes-Rios:

“Gamma Eta Sorority, Inc. strives to develop and uplight strong women leaders from all backgrounds. Our organization is committed to creating a safe space for all our members, and as such, we firmly believe that hazing has no place in Greek life. We are committed to prevent hazing because harmful practices do not align with our mission or our core values. Powerful women empower others, so Gamma Eta firmly challenges our sisters to stand against hazing for the betterment of our communities.”

Lambda Sigma Gamma Sorority, Inc. National President Keosha Griffiths:

“Bringing awareness to the problems with hazing is important to our organization because we were formed as a a sisterhood that would not only act as family away from home but one that would also bring together women of various backgrounds and incorporate the principles of self-improvement, scholastic excellence, civic responsibility and leadership. We have a NO hazing policy and have record for NO tolerance in any type of hazing incidents. We believe in the well being of our members – both current and future. We believe in trusting in each other and treating each other with respect.”

Lambda Tau Omega Sorority, Inc. President Alicia Correa:

“Lambda Tau Omega Sorority, Inc. is a Sisterhood dedicated to her motto “Excellence Through Unity, Knowledge and Dedication”. As such, we are an organization with a ZERO-tolerance policy on hazing. We do not condone any form of hazing or any activity that does not contribute towards the growth and development of our potential new members. We do pursue disciplinary actions towards our Sisters and/or Chapters who do not align with this viewpoint.”

Mu Sigma Upsilon Sorority, Inc. President, Ashley N. Brevil:

“Mu Sigma Upsilon Sorority, Inc. was created to unite women from various backgrounds and cultures. We do not haze because we are committed to uplifting and encouraging one another rather than inflicting physical and psychological harm. We reinforce this belief by challenging our members to not only recognize hazing but to learn how to prevent it from happening at all.” Click here to read the full statement.

Omega Phi Chi Multicultural Sorority, Inc. National President Crystal Henry:

“Omega Phi Chi Multicultural Sorority, Inc. does not condone any acts of hazing within any entity of the organization. There is never a justifiable reason for hazing. Hazing is dangerous physically, emotionally, psychologically, and socially. Omega Phi Chi is concerned with the health and well-being of its members. Hazing goes against our purpose to uplift women regardless of her race, color, or creed, and denies women the ability to create a true bond of sisterhood.” Click here to read the full statement.

Phi Sigma Chi Multicultural Fraternity, Inc. National President Jerron John:

“Phi Sigma Chi Multicultural Fraternity was founded on the principles of bringing young men together to bring change to the world that we live in. We reject the concept of hazing in any form because we values the life and wellness of all men, understanding that hazing only perpetuates hate and resentment among people and families. It leaves physical, mental, and emotional wounds that may never heal.  We seek to unite men of all backgrounds and challenge the negative stereotypes often associated with Greek letter organizations.”

Theta Nu Xi Multicultural Sorority, Inc. National President Amanda Pohl:

“Theta Nu Xi Multicultural Sorority, Inc. values all women and hazing is antithetical to demonstrating that value. Our organization cultivates community through our tenets of sisterhood, leadership, scholarship, service, and multiculturalism and believes that this community thrives when we invest in building this together. Hazing tears down community and we believe that there is enough tearing down in our society that Theta Nu Xi should be a safe haven for our members.”
